Professional Upholstery and Furniture Repair

Needle Rock is a West Wales based professional upholstery / reupholstery and furniture repair / furniture restoration service for antique and modern furniture. We have considerable experience with fabric armchairs and sofas, dining chairs, occasional chairs, unusual chairs, rocking chairs and reclining chairs. We can advise you on fabric design, sofa recovering and upholstery repair; and drawing on traditional and modern upholstery techniques, we are able to conserve, repair and sympathetically restore your cherished furniture to optimal condition. Repairs to framework and structure, and often the manufacture of missing components, can be done in-house. Needle Rock are agents for several London-based fabric houses, offering an extensive selection of upholstery fabrics to suit different budgets.

We also create bespoke furniture to your design brief and have a small collection of finished designer chairs, sofas and chaise longues available for online sale. Needle Rock are agents for the Designers Guild, a company with a passionate goal to give people the confidence to live with colours and textures to enrich our lives. When these high-quality upholstery fabrics are combined with characterful antique and vintage pieces, they make for a fun, yet stylish and unique addition to your home. With internationally renowned fabric designers such as Christian Lacroix, John Derian and Ralph Lauren, the ever-changing collections are always vibrant, fresh and exciting. Geometric nature is a prominent focus on this season’s collections, and great emphasis is placed on exquisitely drawn botanical leaves and opulent graphic print. With more than 100 colours of velvet to choose from, add a sumptuous velvet fabric for a lavish mix of textures.

We can undertake seating refurbishments for local businesses, restaurants, cafes and bars, and stock a range of commercially suitable upholstery fabrics, vinyls and faux leathers especially designed for high-demanding commercial environments. All products supplied by Needle Rock comply with current Fire Regulations, and CRIB 5 certification is available on request.

We’ll bring you news of our most recent projects via our new blog, and we’d love to hear your feedback.

Quality Upholsterers

Needle Rock provides professional advice and a furniture reupholstery and repair service for antique, vintage, modern and commercial upholstery. Ali is professionally trained by ‘The Association of Master Upholsterers & Soft Furnishers’ (AMUSF) in traditional and modern upholstery techniques.

Our mission is to provide a friendly and personal upholstery service; to conserve and sympathetically restore antique furniture for future generations; and to promote traditional methods and materials in a modern context.

We aim to provide a suitable and honest evaluation for each piece, guiding customers to choose the best combination of upholstery options to suit the commission and budget.

Through the Workshop Door – June 2019

We've had a busy month in June; settling into the new workshop has been a delight, and I’m so pleased with the extra space at my disposal. I’ve been working hard to try and catch up with the backlog (not quite there yet – but nearly!)

With help from Gordon - my husband, Needle Rock has gained an integral workshop fabric store. Whilst the lovely barn provides adequate workspace, we need to ensure that even in winter, the fabrics are stored in warm, dry conditions. The fabric store is based on a flat-roofed summerhouse which Gordon has modified internally to provide racking for rolls of fabric. We soon realised that being flat-roofed, it would be possible to have additional storage on the summerhouse roof. To achieve this, the roof has been strengthened and we’ve fitted an old staircase giving us easy access. All has been made safe with handrails, and we have compartment bays to store large sheets of foam. The inside of the store resembles a medieval building with timber columns, roof beams and cornices.

The highlight this month has been the renovation of a glorious Victorian Settle that I rescued a couple of years ago from the old RAFA Club in Bridge street, Aberystwyth (which has now evolved into Bar 46). It was pretty beaten up when we rescued it; I removed the old upholstery, and Gordon made it a new arm, a new front spill and ensured all the joints were solid. It’s been in storage for the last couple of years, but with the additional space I am now able to move along some of these projects – and the journey into its new life has gained momentum. The entire piece has been painted in a multitude of greys reinstating the natural aged and distressed look. It’s been fully reupholstered to the highest standard; with a superb burnt orange seat, complementary upholstery nails, and the back has a touch of decadence, using the ‘Talisman’ fabric by French designer ‘Christian Lacroix’ sold through the Designers Guild. The fabric design is reminiscent of looking through a church window on a dark night – and the velvety feel is just superb! This piece is ideal for a hallway, kitchen or landing and is looking for its new home! Further details and dimensions are listed at www.needlerock.co.uk/sale .
