History – This chair is an antique ‘Grandmother Chair’ from the early Victorian era. I bought this chair from a local couple in the next village, as they were buying a new reclining chair, and was surplus to their requirements. This chair has traditional sprung upholstery, original ceramic castors, beautifully turned front legs and geometric carvings.
Tender, Loving Care – I removed the upholstery top cover, and was delighted to see the sprung upholstery in the seat was absolutely fine. It’s not often this happens! Using our homemade Needle Rock ‘restoring fluid’” on the wood, it not only cleans the wood but feeds it as well. Then I waxed and buffed the chair until it shone.
Design Brief – As it’s a ‘Grandmother Chair’, I decided to use a fabric in a colourway called ‘Granny Smith’. I thought this was very apt. The fabric is ‘Hoop La’ from Abbotsford Textiles; a hard-wearing durable wool fabric. I absolutely love the different sized hoops on this fabric, I hope you do too. As a contrast I have styled the inside and outside backs in an aubergine stripy upholstery fabric. The strips of lime compliment the green hoops perfectly.
You know I love mixing old with new, so I’ve created a matching footstool too. I hope you like it.
