Gordon and I picked up this Jacobean Revival Chair on a trip to Gloucester when visiting an old barn, full to the rafters, with antique treasures.  The dealer was relocating to France, so was clearing surplus stock. We were like “kids in a sweet shop”!  What might we stumble across?

Tender, loving care – The frame was a bit ‘wobbly’, but not surprising given its age.  Gordon knocked it apart, re-glued all the joints, so it was good and strong again.  Both finials had been lost over the years, so Gordon turned two finials on the workshop lathe.  Add a couple of coats of wood stain to finish the job.

We cleaned the chair frame with our hand-made Needle Rock ‘magical restoring fluid’.  It not only cleans, but also feeds and nourishes the wood.    This task is very time-consuming on a chair frame of this complexity.  However, the efforts are rewarded as you see the layers of grime being removed, and the genuine patina of the woodwork is revealed.  A thorough wax brought the shine back to the wood.

Design Brief – With the gleaming woodwork, the design brief for this Jacobean Revival Chair was easy – to inject bold pops of colour.  The fabulous designer fabric from Arley House, Navarra, in the plum colourway looks great with the ageing tones of the woodwork.  Bold pops of magenta and purple, coupled with the calming splashes of moss green, lavender blues leading into the greys, made an ideal colour palette.   Contrasting stripes give it a bizarre twist.

Height = 114 cm, Seat Height = 49 cm, Width = 48 cm, Depth = 45 cm.
