Ali and Gordon picked up this little chair, now transformed into the ‘Peru Inspired Chair’, on a trip to Gloucester. They were visiting an old barn, full to the rafters, with antique treasures. The antique dealer was relocating her business to France, so there was plenty of surplus stock to choose from. Ali & Gordon were like “kids in a sweet shop”! What might they stumble across? At Needle Rock, we love little chairs like this. This is a pin-stuffed chair, having just a thin layer of upholstery on its seat. This is a small chair, probably made long ago for a much-loved child. There are inlaid portions of Mother-of-pearl on the back of the chair, giving it an added ‘sparkle’.
Ali visited Peru in 2018, and this chair is inspired by the vibrant colours and ethnic design. Raising money for Cancer Research Wales, Ali and 29 other Welsh fundraisers trekked the Machu Picchu trail and raised in excess of £125,000.
Peru is a country full of vibrant colours that reflect the unique culture, creativity and energy of its people. So, once the upholstery seating was attached, Ali used a vibrant blue faux suede for the top cover. This blue faux suede is tactile as well as bright, and has been coupled with a funky pink braid. The small upholstered area on the back is adorned with a dash of stripy ‘Severini Magenta’ fabric from the Designers Guild. The whole look is finished off with lime-green ‘dips’ on the front legs, which work incredibly well with the vertical lines of strong colour.
This Peru Inspired Chair is a great example of functional art from Needle Rock. Being small, it could work well in a child’s bedroom. Alternatively, it would be ideal in the hallway, bathroom, or any place in the home that requires a bold pop of colour.
